Supporting Your Stream--Audio Gateways
We strive to help your station
improve your membership and revenue-generating capabilities. Audio
gateway announcements preceding your live stream could identify the
station, provide a call-to-action for membership, or be used for sponsorship or underwriting.
Sponsor/Underwriter Gateway We
have a system that allows us insert a gateway spot before
your live stream starts playing. A number of stations like WYPR have found
underwriting or sponsorships to help support their streams.
Underwriting gateways are
subject to the same conditions as terrestrial underwriting spots.
To add your audio gateway
You may record your own audio gateway (we strongly recommend this) with a call to membership.
- Length: Recommended 8- 16 seconds
long. As your online
listeners will hear them many times, shorter is better.
- Personalize the gateway: Use your call letters, familiar voices, your tone and familiar music when creating your gateway.
- Electronic
Format:
- For
Windows media steams: asf (note, if you have .wma file, you can manually
change the extension to .asf).
- For Mp3 streams, mp3 format file is required.
- Sound Quality: We recommend encoding the gateway files at the same bitrate as your live stream. If you're not sure, encode at 64kbps.
- FTP the file into JukeBox using an FTP program such as Filezilla or CuteFTP.
- Enter FTP Host/Server name: ftp://ftp.publicbroadcasting.net and enter the same username and password you use to access the Admin Tools.
- Add Metadata: After you've FTP'd the file, log on to your JukeBox admin toolset:
http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/xxxx/ondemand.ondemandadmin (subst your call letters) and click "Add Metadata”. You should see the files you just uploaded.
- Next: Go to "Manage All Media" and click 'File Link". A window with a URL and media ID will appear.
- Send us the direct link: Send us the full direct file link at support and we will place the gateway, generally within 48 hours.
- NOTE: Certainly players and apps don’t
support or don’t handle the gateways well. Most notably, iTunes
does not currently support streaming gateways. The gateway will
play, and then the next file in the iTunes library will play, and this
is rarely the stream. For stations that use gateways, we can provide an
alternative link on your streaming page that does not include the
gateway file, which helps with iTunes. We know this isn't great, but
it's not an easy one to solve. Trust us.
- Not Compatible: iTunes, QuickTime (.pls is compatible on iPhone, .m3u is not)
- Compatible: Windows Media Player, WinAmp,
Real, QuickTime (.pls only) many other players, NPR News iPhone app, NPR Android App (as of
the next update), PRX Player iPhone app. HINT: When entering your stream info into NPR Station Connect or with PRX, please use the url ending in .m3u.
